AUD/USD Mired by Hawkish Fed Comments Amid Easing Geopolitical Tensions
The Australian Dollar's performance against the US dollar was lackluster on Tuesday, as hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials offset easing geopolitical tensions. The AUD/USD pair traded at around 0.7114, near its opening price.
US President Donald Trump's earlier comments about Iran were later downplayed, with the president acknowledging a productive meeting with negotiators from Washington and Tehran. This development helped to reduce concerns about a potential Middle East conflict.
However, hawkish statements from Federal Reserve officials raised concerns about interest rate hikes. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin stated that inflation would need time to subside and additional rate increases might be necessary to achieve the 2% target. Boston Fed's Susan Collins also endorsed rate hikes, warning about the risks of persistent high inflation.
RBA Governor Bullock echoed similar sentiments, saying that upside risks to inflation could materialize due to high energy prices. This hawkish tone weighed on the AUD/USD pair, preventing it from gaining significant ground.
