AUD/USD Sensitive to Chinese PMI Data: A Practical Framework
The Australian dollar (AUD) is sensitive to Chinese economic data, particularly the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI). A beat or miss on PMI expectations has a significant impact on AUD/USD trading. Traders should focus on beats and misses rather than absolute numbers.
China publishes two sets of PMI data each month: NBS Manufacturing PMI and Caixin Manufacturing PMI. The Non-Manufacturing PMI reflects services sector activity. A reading where both manufacturing and services PMIs are weak simultaneously signals a fragile Chinese economy, limiting the positive impact on AUD.
The 50 threshold is crucial in understanding PMI data. When both sectors align and stay above 50, it's bullish for AUD/USD. Conversely, when both sectors are below 50, it's bearish. Technical analysis shows that the 14-day RSI near 63 supports positive momentum, while technical support levels are seen at the nine-day EMA around 0.7152.
Before a China PMI release, traders should check key moving averages on the daily and four-hour charts, identify nearest resistance and support levels, and set price alerts at key technical levels. After the release, wait for the first 15-minute candle to close before acting.
