Aussie Dollar's Fluctuations Bring Business Headaches

The Australian dollar's fluctuations against the US currency are causing headaches for businesses that import and export goods. The Reserve Bank's latest figures show the Aussie dollar slipping to US69.33 cents on October 2, down from US69.77 cents on September 30.

This may seem like a small change, but it highlights a broader commercial problem: Australian businesses earn, spend, and make promises in currencies whose relationship keeps changing.

For importers, a falling dollar can increase costs. For exporters receiving US dollars, it can lift Australian-dollar revenue. But the outcome requires a closer look, as there is no exchange rate that makes every Australian better off.

A hypothetical example illustrates the challenge: if an importer buys a $100,000 shipment at 70 cents to the Aussie dollar, paying the supplier would require approximately A$142,857. At 65 cents, the same invoice requires approximately A$153,846, nearly A$11,000 extra before other costs.

Businesses exposed include retailers buying overseas stock, manufacturers purchasing components, and firms importing machinery. Exposure can also extend to digital services billed in US dollars.
