Australian Wool Prices Extend Decline Amid Buyer Selectivity and Grower Resistance
The Australian wool market continued its decline during Week 14 of September 2026, with buyers remaining choosy and growers resisting lower prices. According to the Australian Wool Innovation weekly price report, 29,406 bales were put forward for sale on Tuesday 29 September and Wednesday 30 September 2026, with 25,647 cleared.
The Eastern Market Indicator dropped by 26 cents to settle at 1,819 Australian cents per kilogram. This decline was exacerbated by currency shifts, as the Australian dollar fell 1.25 US cents to 69.77 US cents, making it even more difficult for offshore buyers to purchase wool. As a result, the EMI shed an additional 41 US cents to settle at 1,269 US cents per kilogram.
Quality differentiation remained marked in the market, with Sydney experiencing strong competition for high-quality 19-micron and finer wool. Italian and Indian buyers were active on preferred lots, while poorer-style and specification wool lost ground.
