Australia's Cash Conundrum: Balancing Digital Progress with Physical Choice
Australia's financial landscape is shifting as digital payments become increasingly prevalent.
The Reserve Bank of Australia's 2025 Consumer Payments Survey found that cash accounted for 15% of in-person transactions, but three-quarters of people surveyed had cash in their wallets and two in five kept it somewhere else. Around one in three Australians said they would experience genuine hardship or major inconvenience if they could no longer withdraw or use cash.
The Federal Government introduced legislation to regulate the cash distribution system, ensuring that banknotes remain available to those who need them. The government is not trying to replace digital payments with cash, but rather to provide choice and flexibility for individuals to choose how they want to pay.
