Bangladesh Central Bank Holds Nearly $2 Billion in Gold Reserves
Bangladesh's central bank holds approximately 14,278kg of gold in its reserves, valued at around Tk13,436 crore (134.3 billion). A significant portion, about 188,927 troy ounces, is stored at the Bank of England and used for lending activities.
The remaining gold is held in Bangladesh Bank's own vaults or as deposits with two major UK-based international banks: Standard Chartered Bank and HSBC. These banks collectively hold around 186,274 troy ounces of gold, worth approximately Tk91.71 billion.
Gold prices have risen globally due to geopolitical uncertainty and US President Donald Trump's trade policies, pushing the value of Bangladesh Bank's reserves higher. The international price of gold was US$3,297 per ounce in June 2025, increasing to US$4,430 last Sunday.
In Bangladesh, domestic gold prices also rose after the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, crossing Tk100,000 for the first time in July 2023. By June this year, the price of 22-carat gold was Tk221,966 per bhori, and as of last Sunday, it stood at Tk235,146.
