Bank of Canada Strike Tests Labour Law Amid Replacement Worker Controversy
NDP leader Avi Lewis claims the federal government is violating its own labor laws by allowing the Bank of Canada to use replacement workers during a strike involving security officers. The strike, which began in June, is nearing the 100-day mark with no resolution in sight.
In 2024, Canada passed legislation prohibiting federally regulated workplaces from hiring replacement workers during a legal strike, and the new rules took effect last year.
At a rally outside the Bank of Canada today, Lewis stated that this strike is the first test of that law and that the government and the bank have made it clear they're prepared to 'defy the law of this country.'
