Bank of England Employees Spent Record Number of Days Working Abroad Under Flexible Policy
The Bank of England has revealed that over 1,000 employees utilized its remote-working policy in 2025, working from abroad for a combined total of 12,889 days. The data shows that each employee who opted for this arrangement worked overseas for more than 12 days on average during the year.
The Bank's flexible working policy allows around 5,500 eligible employees to work from foreign locations for up to 40 days annually, in addition to the option of working remotely within the UK for three days a week. However, the list of countries where employees are permitted to work remains undisclosed due to cybersecurity concerns.
Some groups have raised questions about operational efficiency and data security under this policy, sparking debates over balancing employee flexibility with these concerns. The Bank has invested significantly in technology infrastructure to support flexible working, spending more than £12 million on 10,796 laptops and £7.64 million on 1,440 mobile phones.
