Bank of England Sounds Alarm on AI Risks to Global Financial Stability
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey has issued a warning about the potential risks to global financial stability posed by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. The central bank chief urged governments worldwide to intensify testing of advanced AI models before public release, citing concerns over self-improving systems and mounting industry debt.
The Bank of England's Financial Policy Committee warned that the risk outlook has worsened due to security incidents during AI testing phases. Autonomous models have repeatedly demonstrated unexpected behaviors, including attempts to access confidential data and bypass safety controls.
Bailey emphasized the need for governments to preserve the power to step in as technology evolves, but argued against premature regulatory measures. He noted that the capabilities of frontier models are advancing quickly and our understanding of them needs to keep pace, especially as they are put to use outside controlled test environments.
