Bank of England Sounds Alarm on AI Threat to UK Economy
Andrew Bailey, the Governor of the Bank of England, has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could pose a significant threat to the UK economy. In his warning, Bailey highlighted that not every company in the AI sector will succeed, despite the hundreds of billions being invested.
Bailey drew parallels with past tech shifts, noting that only a few companies have managed to dominate their respective markets. He also expressed concern that AI could become a 'very powerful weapon' in the wrong hands, citing his own recent experience with deepfake images.
The warning comes as major tech giants and AI firms such as Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI are attracting multi-trillion-dollar valuations amidst huge market expectations. In fact, OpenAI's latest model was recently delayed due to safety concerns identified during internal testing by CEO Sam Altman.
