Bank of Japan (BOJ) Board Member Junko Koeda has cautioned against an overly cautious approach to raising interest rates, signaling that the central bank remains committed to further rate hikes in the near future. Speaking on Thursday to local leaders in Kumamoto, southwestern Japan, Koeda emphasized the need to address both price risks and accommodative financial conditions.
"Given that there have been considerable upside risks to prices in addition to continued accommodative financial conditions, the Bank should not become overly cautious about raising the policy interest rate," Koeda stated. Her remarks suggest that the BOJ is accelerating its normalization efforts following recent adjustments to borrowing costs.
The comments come as the BOJ continues to navigate economic challenges, including inflationary pressures and the need to balance monetary policy with broader financial stability. Koeda's stance indicates a firm belief in the necessity of further rate increases to manage these risks effectively.
