BOJ Conducts Mysterious FX Rate Check

The Bank of Japan conducted an FX rate check earlier today, according to Nikkei reports. This move is often seen as a precursor to intervention but can sometimes be a feint. The report hit some time ago and since then, USD/JPY has backed off from 158.00.

The calls were made late on the 18th and into the 19th, Tokyo time. The drop in the pair underscores the hesitancy in the market. Market participants remember that earlier this year, there was intervention late in the day on a Friday. We've also seen intervention after BOJ meetings so all the signs are aligned at the moment.

US Treasury Secretary dared the market to buy USD/JPY when it was trading at 153.75 last week and so far, he's been wrong. He did say that he has asymmetric information though and part of that could be the size of the cash pile that Japan is willing to intervene with.
