BoJ Governor Caught in Rate Hike Crossfire
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda is facing a difficult balancing act as he tries to manage monetary policy amidst conflicting demands from different stakeholders.
On one hand, Scott Bessent, the US Treasury chief who helped bolster the yen, has been urging faster interest rate hikes. Last Friday, Ueda raised rates for a second time in three months, giving Bessent what he was looking for.
However, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is focused on boosting economic growth and wants to see more rapid expansion. Her two appointees on the BoJ board were the only ones to vote against Friday's rate hike, a sign of things to come in 2024 when she gets to replace the current hawkish members.
With inflation and borrowing costs rising almost everywhere, keeping both camps happy will become increasingly challenging for Ueda.
