BoJ Governor Ueda Confirms Gradual Rate Hikes Amid Moderate Recovery
Bank of Japan (BoJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda stated on Tuesday that Japan's economy is experiencing a moderate recovery, despite some lingering weaknesses. He highlighted that business sentiment remains strong, as evidenced by the September tankan survey, and noted that underlying inflation is nearing the 2% target.
Ueda emphasized that economic conditions and price trends align with the BoJ's baseline forecasts. He assured that financial conditions remain accommodative, even after the September rate hike, and reiterated the central bank's commitment to further gradual rate increases. The pace and timing of future adjustments will depend on economic developments and the likelihood of baseline projections materializing.
The BoJ's governor stressed the importance of anchoring underlying inflation around 2%. This consistent messaging has reinforced market confidence in the central bank's ability to meet its inflation target. The USD/JPY pair saw a modest uptick of 0.18%, trading at 158.20 at the time of writing.
FXStreet's SpeechTracker rated Ueda's speech at 7.2, in line with his historical average, indicating no major policy shift. The speech maintained a mildly hawkish tone, as the BoJ remains focused on gradual tightening while avoiding aggressive measures. This approach is expected to support the Japanese Yen in the medium term.
