BoJ Hawkishness Fails to Spook Yen Bears as USD/JPY Pushes for 158
The Japanese Yen has trimmed its gains from last Friday's rebound against the US Dollar on Monday. Despite a hawkish stance by the Bank of Japan and warnings of potential intervention, the USD/JPY pair is pushing towards the 158.00 level.
The BoJ's monetary policy meeting minutes revealed that some policymakers advocated for faster interest rate increases in September, amid growing concerns about inflationary pressures. This has fueled hopes that the bank will continue to tighten its monetary policy over the coming months.
However, two policymakers voted to leave the benchmark interest rate on hold, casting doubt on the scope of the hawkish cycle and disappointing investors. The Yen has since depreciated by more than 1.5% against the US Dollar.
The US authorities have expressed concern about Yen weakness, with Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama affirming that US President Donald Trump had expressed his concern in a summit with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last week. The comments were echoed by Takaichi later in the day, who reaffirmed their commitment against excess volatility and disorderly moves on the Yen.
