BOJ Rate Hike May Boost Japanese Regional Banks
Japanese bank stocks are poised to be impacted by a potential Bank of Japan rate hike, which is expected in September. The move could significantly affect domestic focused banks and insurers, changing how they earn money and their sensitivity to interest rates.
The BOJ's decision will have far-reaching consequences for Japanese financial stocks, particularly those with high exposure to domestic loan and deposit spreads.
Three regional banks - Shizuoka Financial GroupInc (TSE:5831), Gunma Bank (TSE:8334), and Chugin Financial GroupInc (TSE:5832) - are highlighted as potential beneficiaries of the rate hike. These banks have earnings closely linked to domestic interest rates and household activity.
Shizuoka Financial GroupInc, with a market cap of ¥1.80 trillion, is expected to see its income potential increase due to higher net interest margins. However, analysts note that revenue is forecast to decline over the next few years, and loan loss reserves only cover 59% of bad loans.
Gunma Bank has also seen earnings momentum, with a 31.3% net profit margin and 22.9% forecast earnings growth each year. The bank's dividend yield stands at 2.62%, but its ROE is modest at 9.9% and loan loss coverage is only 36%.
Chugin Financial GroupInc has been growing earnings, with forecasts pointing to about 10.5% annual growth and a 63.5% increase over the past year. The stock trades on a P/E of 13.7x, below the banks industry average, but its ROE is modest at 6.5%
