BOJ Rate Hikes Loom as Japan's Inflation Reaches 2%
Japan's inflation rate rose to 2% in July, exceeding market expectations and bolstering predictions for further interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan (BOJ). The rebound in inflation is significant, as it suggests that policymakers must balance supporting the economy with curbing inflation.
Masato Koike, Senior Economist at Sompo Institute Plus, stated that if energy prices rise further while a weak yen continues to push up import costs, domestic inflationary pressures in Japan may remain resilient. He expects the BOJ to raise interest rates in September, and market interest rate pricing has reflected similar shifts.
The USD/JPY pair is still trading below the 100-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the middle band of the 20-period Bollinger Bands, indicating that selling pressure above has not been effectively absorbed. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently around 43, showing some recovery from previous lows but remaining below the 50 midpoint.
The BOJ's policy normalization could create conditions for the yen to gain support in the coming months, as Japan's policy rate increases and structural reforms continue. However, technical resistance in the 159.45-160.00 range remains critical for the USD/JPY pair, with a breakthrough above $160 potentially opening up further room for a rebound.
