BOJ Triples ETF Sales Pace Amid Market Resilience

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) caught investors off guard on Friday by announcing plans to speed up the sale of its extensive exchange-traded fund (ETF) holdings. Despite this unexpected move, Japanese equities held steady, demonstrating confidence in the market's ability to handle the increased supply.

The BOJ's decision came alongside its widely anticipated choice to maintain interest rates unchanged. Starting in January, the central bank will nearly triple the pace of ETF sales to approximately ¥860 billion ($5.5 billion) per year based on book value. This adjustment signals a shift in the BOJ's strategy amid evolving market conditions.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average initially faced selling pressure in the morning due to a global tech selloff. However, the index managed to recover slightly, trading around 2% lower in the afternoon. This resilience suggests that investors are not overly concerned about the BOJ's accelerated ETF sales.
