BOJ Triples ETF Sales Pace Boosting Market Confidence

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) caught investors off guard on Friday by announcing plans to speed up the sale of its extensive exchange-traded fund (ETF) holdings. Starting in January, the BOJ will nearly triple the pace of ETF sales to approximately ¥860 billion ($5.5 billion) per year. Despite this surprise move, Japanese equities managed to recover from earlier losses, demonstrating confidence in the market's ability to handle the increased supply.

The Nikkei 225 Stock Average had been under pressure in the morning due to a broader global tech selloff. However, by the afternoon, the index had trimmed its losses to trade roughly 2% lower. The BOJ's decision to keep interest rates unchanged was widely anticipated, but the accelerated ETF sales were not.

The market's resilience suggests that investors believe the Japanese stock market can absorb the additional ETF supply without significant disruption. This optimism may be attributed to strong fundamentals or expectations of continued economic stability.
