Canada Defies Opposition on Research Facility Closures
The Canadian federal government is standing firm on its decision to close seven research facilities across the country. The closure is part of a cost-cutting exercise aimed at prioritizing investment in research expertise and activities over operational costs.
According to a report released by the government, the decision reflects a shift towards improving efficiency while sustaining investment in innovation that benefits the agriculture and agri-food sector and grows the economy.
The House of Commons committee on agriculture and agri-food had previously recommended keeping the seven research centres open. However, the government has confirmed that 17 research centres will remain operational across the country, with at least one centre in each province.
The Agriculture Union and the National Farmers Union have expressed disappointment with the decision, stating that it threatens Canada's food security and destroys decades of innovation and research in agricultural science.
