Canada Extends Trading Hours as Economy Prepares for Slight Decline
The Canadian Exchange Inc. (CIX) is set to extend trading hours for investors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., starting today, as part of its plans to modernize capital markets in Canada.
This move will eventually allow trading to be available 23 hours a day, Monday to Friday. The change aims to level the playing field and provide greater access to investors.
The Canadian economy is expected to release its GDP numbers for July on Tuesday, showing a slight decline in gross domestic product due to dips in manufacturing, wholesale trade, and retail sectors.
However, spending in entertainment and culture should help offset some losses from other sectors, as the country bounced back strongly in the second quarter. The U.S.-driven trade war is expected to weigh on growth in the months to come.
