Canada Hits Back at US Tariffs with $20 Billion Retaliatory Measure
Canada has announced it will impose tariffs on hundreds of U.S. goods worth around $20 billion per year, in response to Donald Trump's tariff policy. The new rules take effect on September 8 and include tariffs of up to 50% on various products.
The Canadian government is targeting metal products, including household foil and railroad locomotives, as well as electronics, clothing, seafood, fish, and dairy products. Large household appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines, and stoves, will also face additional tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that the new tariffs could affect consumers but said the government's goal is to protect domestic manufacturers and offset losses 'on a dollar-for-dollar basis'.
The Canadian government has also prepared support programs for local businesses, including interest-free loans with repayment deferred until the end of Donald Trump's term. The measures aim to increase pressure on the U.S. economy in response to its tariff policy.
