Canada Redirects Canadarm3 Investments to Fuel Lunar Exploration Ambitions

The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is repurposing its investment in Canadarm3 to support the next phase of lunar exploration, driven by Canada's ambitious Artemis program. The agency aims to leverage technologies and expertise gained through Canadarm3 to adapt work underway for complex lunar operations.

According to CSA, early deployment of robotics technologies on the Moon is crucial in validating Canadian capabilities and positioning industrial expertise for future logistics activities on the lunar surface.

The repurposing effort will also create new commercialization opportunities linked to emerging space stations. Canada's world-renowned expertise in robotics and emerging space technologies makes it an ideal player in the fast-evolving space economy, with a focus on strengthening its ability to seize opportunities while protecting well-paid jobs and supply chains across the country.

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, emphasized that 'space exploration is essential to Canada's economic future.' She added that investing in space today will build the companies, talent, and capabilities needed to grow the economy, create good jobs, and compete globally.

Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space Ltd., expressed support for CSA's intention, stating that 'Canada's leadership as a spacefaring nation' is at stake. He noted that Canada's four-decade competitive advantage in space robotics offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to advance its presence on the lunar surface.
