Canada Rolls Out Counter-Tariffs as Tariff War Escalates
President Donald Trump's escalated tariffs on Canadian goods have taken effect, and in response, Prime Minister Mark Carney's Cabinet has unveiled roughly $27.6 billion in counter-tariffs to take effect on September 8.
The move is seen as a tax on Canadians at a time when consumer debt just hit a record $2.6 trillion.
Canadian politicians had previously warned that Trump's tariffs would backfire by raising costs for U.S. consumers, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford stating 'A tariff on Canada is a tax on the American people.'
Ottawa's counter-tariffs will raise costs for Canadian consumers, who are already struggling with a cost-of-living crisis.
Some experts warn that tariffs do nothing but weaken Canada's economy and suggest strengthening it through other means such as tax reform, dismantling internal trade barriers, and negotiating new trade deals.
