Canada Seeks to Catalyze $1 Trillion in Investment Amid Global Economic Shift
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the Canada Investment Summit 2026 in Toronto on September 14-15, 2026. He began by referencing the country's history, specifically the French explorer Samuel de Champlain's discovery of Port Royal in Nova Scotia in 1604. Carney stated that today's Canada is a 'safe harbour' and a base for building the new global economic order.
The world is becoming more 'dangerous and divided', with sovereignty and openness in tension, according to Carney. He emphasized the need to take care of oneself while also taking care of others. This approach involves building domestic strength and diversifying partnerships abroad.
Carney announced that Canada aims to catalyze $1 trillion in investment over five years across various sectors, including energy, transportation, tech, and defence. To achieve this goal, the government has cut taxes on incomes, capital gains, and business investment, removed federal barriers to internal trade, and accelerated initiatives to tear down regional barriers.
Canada is positioning itself as an energy superpower, advancing a pipeline to transport low-emission oil, creating a new industry for carbon capture and storage, and doubling its LNG exports. The country aims to become the best-connected economy in the world, with agreements signed on critical minerals with over 15 countries and trade deals across five continents.
