Canada has announced it will impose matching tariffs on U.S. goods starting September 8, in response to Washington's 50% duties on about $20 billion of Canadian exports.

The escalation threatens cross-border supply chains and could increase volatility in North American stocks and the Canadian dollar.

The Canadian government plans to target U.S. steel, dairy products, household appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics, pulp and paper.
