Canada Tables Bill to Streamline Major Project Approvals
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has introduced the Building Canada Strong Act to fast-track approvals for major projects. The bill aims to streamline the review process by transferring responsibility from the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada to the Canada Energy Regulator and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
The legislation proposes changes to the Canada Labour Code, particularly with regards to Section 107, which allows the labour minister to intervene in strikes or lockouts. Under the new bill, the minister would need to declare that a dispute is affecting the national interest before using this provision.
Opposition leaders have criticized the bill, accusing the government of prioritizing foreign investors over workers' rights and environmental protection. The Liberal ministers defending the legislation argue that it will strengthen the Canadian economy by allowing more major projects to be built and creating jobs.
