Canada Turns to Europe Amid Trump's Trade War

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been pursuing closer ties with Europe in response to President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies and rhetoric.

In a speech, Trump vowed to be 'your warrior' and 'your retribution' for those who have been wronged and betrayed, which some have interpreted as a declaration of dictatorship.

Since his inauguration on January 20, 2025, Trump has issued over 230 executive orders, with many targeting Canada, including tariffs due to claims that the country is ripping off the US and allowing fentanyl to enter the US from Canada.

However, data shows that less than one percent of American fentanyl comes through Canada, and trade between the two countries is only slightly unbalanced, 2.8% in favor of Canada.

In response, Canadians have been boycotting travel to the US, with a 27% decrease in Canadian travel compared to 2024, resulting in a loss of $4.5 billion to the US economy.

The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has offered Canada 'associate membership' in the EU bloc, which could mean closer economic ties and cooperation on trade policies.
