XRP Ties to Europe's Digital Euro System Spark Fresh Price Target Speculation
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a system that allows banks across the European Union to settle transactions with each other using digital euros and blockchain technology. According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, this is 'the beginning, not the finish' of the project, with a full digital euro pilot planned for mid-2027.
Pontes gives banks a faster way to move value between each other by trading tokenized assets among themselves using digital euros issued by the central bank. This system doesn't replace how banks operate but provides an alternative method of transaction settlement.
The XRP Ledger technology is connected to Pontes through a private network built by Axology, which uses open-source XRP Ledger code. This setup allows tokenized assets to be settled against real central bank euros through Pontes, creating multiple points of contact between XRP Ledger and Europe's new digital banking system.
The scale of money involved in non-cash payments across Europe is staggering, with an estimated 233.8 trillion euros processed every year. Even capturing a small slice of this volume using XRP Ledger-based technology would represent significant real-world activity.
