Canada's 'Building Canada Strong Act' Sparks Environmental Concerns
The Government of Canada has introduced Bill C-39, the Building Canada Strong Act, aimed at streamlining infrastructure project reviews and approvals. The legislation aims to bring speed, certainty, and predictability to how projects are built in Canada.
According to Prime Minister Carney, 'Canada is a country of high standards, but high standards do not require slow decisions.' He believes that the bill will reshape the regulatory approvals process, maintain Canada's rigorous standards, and uphold Indigenous rights. However, environmentalists have expressed concerns about the potential impact on environmental guardrails.
The Climate Action Network Canada has criticized the legislation, stating that it is part of a broader deregulation agenda that prioritizes major projects over environmental protection and labour rights. Katie Gibbs from Climate Action Network Canada said, 'Decarbonizing our economy will require building major projects at speed, but we need to be building the right projects, the right way.'
The David Suzuki Foundation has also expressed concerns about the bill's potential impact on nature protections. Lisa Gue stated that Ottawa's move to streamline regulations is 'code for steamrolling nature protections.'
