Diesel Prices Skyrocket to Record High Amid Global Supply Disruptions
US diesel prices have reached an all-time high due to global supply disruptions and tensions in the Middle East. The national average price has surpassed $6.50 per gallon, up from $5.58 a month ago and representing a 76% increase over last year's prices.
The current crisis is exacerbated by conflicts in Iran and Yemen, which have added to uncertainty over shipping through key waterways like the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has weighed his next steps toward Iran, considering options ranging from military action to economic pressure or a deal. In the meantime, he has pressed Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to halt strikes on Russian refineries, arguing that these attacks worsen the global diesel shortage.
The surge in diesel prices poses significant inflationary risks for the US economy, which relies heavily on this key transport fuel. The Federal Reserve is already battling persistent inflation and raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%-4% last week.
