Canada's Economy Faces Uncertainty Amid Escalating Trade Tensions
Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem expressed concerns about the unpredictability of U.S. trade policy, which could set back recent economic progress in Canada. He stated that businesses had spent the last year adapting to higher tariffs and growth had resumed, but the latest escalation in the trade war with the United States could cause them to delay investment and hiring decisions.
The Canadian economy grew 3.3% on an annualized basis in the second quarter, and Macklem warned that if the new U.S. tariffs remain in place, the rate of growth for the economy could be roughly halved in the fourth quarter to below one percent.
Macklem also highlighted the impact of the conflict in the Middle East on oil prices, which have risen to near US$100 per barrel. He stated that if oil prices stay at this level, inflation is expected to edge up in the coming months.
