Canadian Business Leaders Push for Tax Reforms to Support Domestic Investments
Over 150 Canadian investors and executives have urged Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne to reform tax policies to support domestic firms. In a joint letter, they proposed two key changes inspired by U.S. models. The first would allow federal tax exemptions on capital gains from investments in qualified small businesses, similar to the U.S. qualified small business stock incentive.
The second proposal aims to defer capital gains taxes when proceeds from domestic business sales are reinvested in other Canadian ventures. The signatories argue this would encourage entrepreneurs to reinvest rather than withdraw capital from the economy. The letter was organized by the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association and the Council of Canadian Innovators.
The goal is to reduce barriers to new investments and increase funding for startups. The signatories believe these changes would foster entrepreneurship and strengthen the domestic business ecosystem.
