Carney Seeks $1 Trillion Reversal at September Investment Summit
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to host the Canada Investment Summit in September, aiming to reverse $1 trillion of foreign capital flight over two days. The government estimates that between 2007 and 2018, Canada experienced a significant outflow of capital, with $2 exiting the country for every $1 invested.
The Royal Bank of Canada described this as 'the most significant capital exodus in modern Canadian history.'
Carney's goal is to secure investment in major projects, such as liquefied natural gas facilities and critical minerals mines. The government has set up a Major Projects Office (MPO) to streamline the approval process for these initiatives.
The MPO aims to make decisions on multi-billion-dollar projects faster, reducing the risk of being tied up in years of red tape. However, some critics have expressed caution, saying that it's too early to assess the effectiveness of the MPO.
Despite this, there is growing enthusiasm from the business community to invest in Canada. The government has reported success in securing partnerships with major economies such as China and India, as well as non-traditional partners like Qatar and the UAE.
