Core Inflation Surge Sends JPY Higher Amid Investor Caution
Tokyo's core inflation rate has surged to 2.7%, and as a result, the Japanese Yen (JPY) has firmed up against other major currencies. The news came out at 23:30 GMT, causing a brief drop in USD/JPY below 158.00, but it quickly recovered and is now trading near the middle of Thursday's range.
The Bank of Japan's (BoJ) meeting summary earlier this week had already reduced traders' bets on an October interest rate hike by about half, but the inflation data has likely tempered their expectations further. The USD/JPY pair's first reaction to the news was relatively muted compared to its response to the BoJ's previous announcement.
The Japanese Yen is often seen as a safe-haven investment, and turbulent times tend to strengthen its value against other currencies perceived as riskier. With the current economic climate in mind, the Yen's firming up could be a sign of increased investor caution or a desire for stability.
