Dollar Breaks Above 157 Yen Line Amid BOJ Rate Hike Debate
The US dollar experienced a significant increase against the Japanese yen on Friday, crossing above the 157 yen line. This rise occurred after two members of the Bank of Japan's policy board voted against raising interest rates at a recent policy meeting.
The BOJ had decided to raise its policy interest rate from 1.0 percent to 1.25 percent, as widely anticipated. However, the opposition by these two members sparked concerns about the future trajectory of the current rate increase cycle and disappointed some market players who had hoped for a more substantial hike.
The dollar reached its highest level in two weeks, climbing around 1 yen above the lower 157 yen range after the BOJ released its decision. At 1 p.m., the dollar traded at 157.05-06 yen compared to 155.92-156.02 yen in New York and 155.68-70 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
