Dollar Dips as Markets Await Fed Signals on Rate Hikes

The US dollar held onto its losses on Wednesday as markets awaited the release of Federal Reserve minutes and speeches from policymakers for hints about potential rate hikes. The euro had surged in the previous session after French bond yields dropped following plans by the frontrunner in next spring’s presidential election to cut spending. The Japanese yen weakened despite a dovish Bank of Japan board member expressing support for interest rate increases.

The Fed is scheduled to release minutes from its September 15-16 policy meeting, where it raised interest rates to combat inflation. Recent comments from Fed policymakers have been less hawkish following weaker-than-expected personal consumption expenditures (PCE) and jobs data. Gavin Friend, a senior markets strategist at National Australia Bank, noted, “There seems to be a little bit less urgency on the Fed to hike rates after the softer PCE and then the nonfarm payroll reports recently.”

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose slightly to 101.94 after a previous decline. The euro dipped marginally to $1.1249, while the yen weakened against the dollar. Sterling also saw a slight decrease. Global bond yields have been climbing due to expectations of central bank rate hikes and concerns about government finances.

Expectations for a Fed rate hike in October have decreased to 20.5%, down from 51% a week ago, but markets still anticipate a hike in December. Kansas City Fed President Jeff Schmid emphasized the need for further rate increases to lower inflation. Cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether saw slight declines.
