Dollar Strengthens on Inflation Concerns, Yen Remains Weak
The US dollar held near its two-month high on Thursday as stronger-than-expected economic data revived inflation concerns and boosted rate-hike bets.
The Japanese yen, meanwhile, stayed near a three-week low after Japan returned from holidays. The USD/JPY pair was around 157.94, leaving the yen close to its weakest level in three weeks.
A strong US manufacturing reading and a poorly received $70 billion five-year Treasury auction triggered selling across the bond market, pushing the 10-year yield above 5% for the first time since 2007.
Fed Governor Michael Barr said that a strong economy and rising inflation risks could require further rate hikes, boosting bets on an October increase. CME FedWatch pricing now implies almost a 70% chance of an October increase, up from about 50% a week ago.
