Dollar Surges on Hawkish Rate Hike as Market Awaits Further Tightening
The US dollar surged after the Federal Reserve's hawkish rate hike and signaled further tightening in the market. The Fed's unanimous decision to increase interest rates was seen as a significant move, with the dollar index (DXY) rising 0.7% to a six-week high.
While the hike effectively signalled another 25bp move by December, it remains uncertain whether the Fed will hike again in 2027. The market is cautiously pricing further tightening next year, but some analysts believe that the Fed may not match the initial magnitude of its last tightening cycle.
The Fed's forecasts suggest another rate hike this year, with core PCE inflation for 2026 upgraded to 3.4% from 3.3%. The growth outlook was nudged higher while unemployment was revised lower for 2027, providing further subtle but ultimately hawkish signals within the projections.
