Dollar-Yen Consolidates Near 158 Yen as Euro Sees Modest Buybacks
The dollar-yen pair remained in a tight trading range near 158.20 yen during European foreign exchange trading on the 6th. While U.S. long-term yields dipped, leading to some dollar selling, gains in European currencies against the yen provided enough support to keep the pair stable. As of 20:00, dollar-yen stood at 158.20 yen, up slightly from 158.10 yen earlier in the session. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly fell to around 5.26%, but cross-yen gains, particularly in EUR/JPY, helped push the pair to 158.25 yen.
EUR/JPY saw strong trading, reaching 177.85 yen by 20:00, up from 177.71 yen earlier. Early in European trading, euro buying and yen selling gained momentum as U.S. yields declined. This shifted to a risk-on sentiment, driven by resilient European equities and U.S. stock futures, briefly pushing EUR/JPY to 177.95 yen, near the previous day's high of 178.03 yen. The pound-yen pair also saw gains, peaking at 209.61 yen.
The euro-dollar pair maintained a firm tone, trading at $1.1243 by 20:00, up from $1.1240 earlier. Although the initial momentum from falling U.S. yields eased, the pair remained elevated due to continued gains in EUR/JPY, extending to $1.1248. The Australian dollar faced some selling pressure after previous gains, while yen buying on expectations of a faster Bank of Japan tightening pace receded, supporting cross-yen pairs.
Despite lingering French fiscal concerns, the euro experienced a modest buyback trend. With no major market catalysts, trading remained directionless, reflecting a wait-and-see mood. Key trading ranges included dollar-yen between 157.77 and 158.25 yen, euro-dollar between $1.1203 and $1.1248, and EUR/JPY between 177.03 and 177.95 yen.
