ECB Approaches Approval of UniCredit's Commerzbank Bid Amid Regulatory Caution

The European Central Bank appears to be leaning towards approving UniCredit's bid for Commerzbank, but regulatory hurdles remain. The Italian lender has reportedly cleared preliminary checks in Frankfurt and is awaiting a final review from the ECB.

Despite this momentum, supervisors are cautioning that any eventual integration would be 'lengthy and complex.' This warning tempers expectations of a swift merger, suggesting that even if UniCredit gains approval, the process will take time.

Commerzbank has posted record profits in its first half, with net profit attributable to shareholders jumping to €898 million. The bank also unveiled a €1.2 billion share buyback program, which signals its capacity to deliver shareholder value on its own terms.
