ECB Calls for Tougher Regulations on Stablecoins and Crypto Firms
The European Central Bank has called for stricter regulations on stablecoins, staking, and crypto firms in a response to the European Commission's examination of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA).
MiCA has been in force since December 2024, but the central banks are urging a revamp of the rulebook. They argue that the current regulations do not provide sufficient oversight and protection for consumers.
The central banks are specifically concerned about stablecoins, which they believe can recreate the economic impact of interest payments via supplementary or unregulated offerings. They are calling for a ban on issuing new tokens tied to foreign currencies and a requirement to redeem existing ones if they present a risk to financial stability.
