ECB Hawkishness Sparks French Bond Spreads Widen

The European Central Bank's hawkish stance is sending shockwaves through French government bonds, causing their spreads over German peers to widen beyond 85 basis points in recent weeks.

This comes as natural gas prices in Europe have once again come close to recent peaks, despite a brief respite in energy markets. The ECB has signaled its commitment to its hawkish intentions, with Isabel Schnabel set to reiterate this stance at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday.

The French government's precarious fiscal situation and added layer of political uncertainty are also contributing to market concerns. Polling suggests that Melenchon could advance to the second round run-off in the elections, which markets see as potentially more disruptive.

Fitch is set to review its A+/Stable rating for France after Friday's market close, but it's unlikely to update its assessment ahead of the budget with limited new information. Meanwhile, Italy remains lower rated and exposed to ongoing geopolitical turmoil, yet the market is more concerned about the worsening trajectory of France.
