ECB Holds Fire as Energy Prices Surge, Nagel Warns of Fragile Middle East
The European Central Bank (ECB) is prepared to respond to rising energy prices, according to Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel. Speaking on Friday, he emphasized that the ECB's decision to leave interest rates unchanged on Thursday was a 'good position' from which to monitor further developments.
Nagel noted that oil prices have returned to around $100 per barrel and natural gas prices are surging, suggesting that inflationary pressures may be increasing. However, he stated that the energy price surge is not generating second-round inflation impacts, at least for now.
The Bundesbank President also warned of the fragile situation in the Middle East and expressed uncertainty about future developments.
Nagel's comments suggest that the ECB will take a cautious approach to raising interest rates, possibly waiting until its next meeting on September 10 to analyze incoming data before making a decision.
