ECB Launches Pontes Digital Euro Platform for Banks Amid Dollar Stablecoin Concerns
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched Pontes, a digital euro platform for banks, as part of its efforts to counter the dominance of dollar-denominated stablecoins in Europe. The platform connects tokenized securities platforms to the Eurosystem's TARGET real-time gross settlement system, allowing banks to settle DLT-based transactions in central bank money.
The launch marks the start of Europe's wholesale digital currency infrastructure and is part of a broader ECB strategy to develop public infrastructure anchored in central bank money. The project aims to prevent the importation of foreign currencies into European payment chains and reduce dependence on dollar liquidity.
Pontes is open only to credit institutions, but its success will be crucial for the potential launch of a retail digital euro. The ECB has emphasized that it will only decide whether to issue a digital euro once proposed regulation passes in 2026.
