The European Central Bank (ECB) released its latest bank interest rate statistics for September 2026, revealing notable shifts in borrowing and deposit rates across the euro area. For corporations, the composite cost-of-borrowing indicator rose by 13 basis points to 3.90%, while the rate for new deposits with agreed maturity increased by 23 basis points to 2.48%. The interest rate for overnight deposits from corporations also climbed by 7 basis points to 0.68%.
Households saw a different trend, with the composite cost-of-borrowing indicator for new loans to house purchases remaining broadly unchanged at 3.62%. However, the interest rate for new deposits with agreed maturity from households increased by 19 basis points to 2.37%, while overnight deposits stayed flat at 0.30%. The interest rate on new loans to households for consumption decreased by 12 basis points to 7.82%, driven by both interest rate and weight effects.
The data also highlighted specific changes in loan categories. For corporations, the interest rate on new loans of over €1 million with a floating rate and an initial rate fixation period of up to three months increased by 17 basis points to 3.51%. The rate on new loans of the same size with an initial rate fixation period of over three months and up to one year rose by 18 basis points to 3.96%. For households, the interest rate on loans for house purchase with a floating rate and an initial rate fixation period of up to one year remained broadly unchanged at 3.89%.
The ECB noted that the composite cost-of-borrowing indicators are weighted based on the 24-month moving averages of new business volumes to filter out excessive monthly volatility.
