ECB Seeks Lagarde Successor Amid Speculation Over Early Exit
The European Central Bank (ECB) is preparing for the eventual departure of President Christine Lagarde, who is set to leave office in October 2027. Speculation about a possible early exit has persisted throughout the year, prompting discussions about potential successors.
One name being mentioned as a top contender is Klaas Knot, the former president of the Dutch central bank and a 14-year veteran of the ECB's Governing Council. At 59, Knot brings extensive experience in eurozone monetary policy to the table.
Knot has had a complex relationship with his predecessors, particularly Mario Draghi, whom he initially criticized for aggressive monetary stimulus measures. However, under Lagarde, he became more aligned with the ECB's policy direction, although he was among those pushing for tighter monetary policy in 2022 due to rising inflation.
Other potential candidates include Pablo Hernández de Cos, who has headed the Bank for International Settlements since 2025 and previously served as governor of the Bank of Spain; Joachim Nagel, the president of Germany's central bank; and Nadia Calvino, the president of the European Investment Bank.
The succession process will be shaped by negotiations among eurozone governments, with a balance between national representation, monetary-policy experience, and broader European institutional considerations likely to play a significant role.
