Energy Prices Spark Rate Hike Fears for UK Interest Rates
Bank of England Deputy Governor Clare Lombardelli has sounded an alarm about the potential impact of high energy prices on inflation and interest rates. Speaking at a macroeconomic conference in Warsaw, she warned that if energy prices remain elevated, it could lead to higher wage demands, longer-term inflation expectations, and ultimately, a rise in interest rates.
Lombardelli emphasized that policy makers should not react automatically to higher energy prices but stressed that the Bank of England's policy is 'increasingly likely' to tighten if those prices stay high without signs of cooling inflation or economic weakening. This shift in tone comes just after the Bank of England held its interest rate at 3.75% last week, with a vote of 6-3.
The market has already priced in a 75% chance of a quarter-point increase at the next meeting in November, which could lead to higher borrowing costs and mortgage rates before the decision is even made. For households on tracker or variable-rate loans, this means their monthly payments could adjust quickly if the Bank of England does raise interest rates.
