EURGBP Nears Year Low as France Debt Crisis Weighs on Euro
The EUR/GBP currency pair continues its downward trend for the seventh consecutive day, nearing its year-to-date low around the 0.8460-0.8455 range. The euro's underperformance is driven by concerns over France's escalating debt crisis, which investors fear could spread to other highly indebted European nations. This uncertainty is heightening ahead of next year's French presidential election, raising doubts about future fiscal policies and contributing to the pair's bearish outlook.
Technical indicators suggest the sell-off is becoming overextended. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) remains in negative territory with a declining line, while the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dipped into oversold territory near 25. This signals that further declines may attract dip-buying rather than sustained selling.
Any potential corrective bounce in the EUR/GBP pair could face immediate resistance near the 0.8500 mark, followed by the 0.8540 region. A sustained break above these levels might trigger a short-covering rally, potentially pushing the pair toward the 0.8600 round figure. This level aligns with the 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), a key pivot point that could shift the current bearish bias if closed above on a daily basis.
On the downside, bears may target a break below the previous year-to-date low in the mid-0.8400s, aiming for the 0.8400 mark and eventually testing the May 2025 swing low near 0.8380.
