Euro Area Households and Corporations See Mixed Results in Q2 2026
The European Central Bank (ECB) released its quarterly report on household and non-financial corporate finances in the euro area, covering the second quarter of 2026. The data showed that households' financial investment grew at a lower annual rate of 2.6% after increasing by 2.9% in the previous quarter.
Non-financial corporations (NFCs) saw their financing grow at a higher annual rate of 1.7%, following an increase of 1.5% in the previous quarter. NFCs' gross operating surplus also rose at a higher rate, increasing by 3.2% after decreasing by 0.4% in the previous quarter.
The household sector's gross disposable income increased at a higher annual growth rate of 3.2%, driven by a rise in net property income to 0.2%. However, the household consumption expenditure grew at a faster rate of 4.3%, leading to a decrease in the household gross saving rate to 14.4%.
The ECB also reported that NFCs' debt-to-GDP ratio decreased to 66.0% in the second quarter of 2026 from 66.3% in the same quarter of the previous year, while the non-consolidated debt measure fell to 135.6% from 136.4%.
